| The impact on American national security
However, what some people do not realize is the threat that declining
oil causes our national security. We know that our fighting machines
are huge power consumers.

WASHINGTON— A
new study ordered by the Pentagon warns that the rising cost and
dwindling supply of oil — the lifeblood of fighter jets, warships and
tanks — will make the U.S. military’s ability to respond to hot spots
around the world “unsustainable in the long term.” |
“We
have to wake up,” said Milton R. Copulos, National Defense Council
Foundation president and an authority on the military’s energy needs.
“We are at the edge of a precipice and we have one foot over the edge.
The only way to avoid going over is to move forward and move forward
aggressively with initiatives to develop alternative fuels. Just
cutting back won’t work.”
It is imperative that
we immediately implement alternative energy where possible, so we have
fuel for our military. It is difficult to make our military best in the
world on alternative energy. As an example, can you imagine NASCAR on
alternative fuel? Believe me, it is sure much easier to convert
electricity from natural gas to a windmill. What if our attacker is
Iran or Russia, where the majority of the oil will be in 20 years?
So, just a brief word about how bad the problem is. While America is
currently dependent on others for about 35 quadrillion BTU’s of oil,
that will grow to 62 quadrillion BTU’s of oil by 2020. American
mainland oil production peaked in 1970. Alaska oil peaked in 1980.
World oil supply is estimated to run out
in 2045, just using current rates of use, not the 33% demand increase
by 2020. In the meantime, oil production will shift more to the Persian
Gulf (where the majority of oil will be produced) and Russia.
In China, oil consumption grew 3118% in the last forty years, while
American oil consumption grew 79%. We all embrace the move for China to
provide an economy that helps all Chinese people. We also encourage
China to work together with us peacefully on growing programs
worldwide, as leaders that will ensure the good of all.

So what can you do, right now, to help?

1. Change a light bulb to a compact fluorescent bulb - If
every American swapped just one bulb for an Energy Star labeled CFL, it
would collectively save more than $8 billion in energy costs, prevent
burning 30 billion pounds of coal and remove 2 million cars worth of
greenhouse gas emissions from our atmosphere.
2. Adjust your thermostat by 2 degrees - It's estimated that
1/6 of all energy consumed in the US is from heating and cooling.
3. Remove yourself from postal bulk mail -
dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailing - Every year, 100 million trees, 28
billion gallons of water, and $320 million in local tax money are used
for the production and disposal of junk mail.
4. Unplug unused electronics - Even when electronic devices
are turned off, they use energy. Save over 1,000 lbs of carbon dioxide
and $256 per year.

These five steps need a collective effort, and we are determined to get
more Americans to say “it’s up to me.” However, there are technologies
